"Andrea is an intellectual designer – artist, fashion designer, architect – with a bona fide passion for the myriad facets of that Goethean “eternal feminine [that] draws us on high”, in the form of imagination and learning."

Daria Bignardi

This volume was published to accompany Andrea Incontri. Le Tipe Umane, curated by Caroline Corbetta, which was held at Galleria Tommaso Calabro from February 19 to March 9, 2019. The show staged Incontri’s Tipe Umane – female figures designed freehand on Instagram and subsequently printed, embroidered and framed with precious textiles – which embody Incontri’s diverse and imaginary female universe.

The volume opens with three prefaces by Milan’s Major Beppe Sala, journalist, writer and Tv presenter Daria Bignardi, and journalist and writer Concita de Gregorio, offering different readings of Incontri’s work. A series of images of more than one hundred Tipe Umane tells their story, unveiling their provocative design, refined textures and disparate names, which were originally generated by Intagram’s after typing two casual letters. The volume’s last section is dedicated to the “making of” Le Tipe Umane and to the exhibition held at the gallery, whose backstory is revealed by two texts by Caroline Corbetta and Tommaso Calabro.

Biography Andrea Incontri

List of works

Andrea Incontri was born in Mantua in 1971. After attending art school, he moved to Milan, where he graduated in Architecture. His initial professional partnerships were established at architecture practices, where he specialised in interior design. He soon began to write for a number of design journals. His curiosity and creative sensibility led him towards the world of fashion, where he expanded his understanding of fabrics and of the processes involved in tailoring. Incontri’s work ranges from the design of collections to the originating of concepts for special fashion projects. In the 2000s, he entered into design partnerships with a number of international luxury-sector brands, serving on occasion as creative director. In 2009, he set up his own eponymous brand.
